Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear reshaping surgery, can significantly improve the appearance and confidence of both children and adults. It is performed to address protruding ears, overly large or small ears, and even earlobe abnormalities.

Cosmetic and Reconstructive Ear Surgery

Otoplasty is not just one single surgery, but rather an overall term for several distinct procedures designed to improve the shape, position, or size of your ears. This category includes everything from ear pinning and ear reduction to more complex ear reconstruction and minor earlobe repairs.

Patients, both children and adults, find life-changing results with otoplasty. It can permanently correct ears that protrude, helping a child find confidence early on, just as effectively as it can help an adult who has felt self-conscious their entire life.

While the specific techniques differ, the end goal for all is to create a more natural, balanced, and proportionate appearance, boosting your self-esteem and helping you feel completely confident in your appearance.

Types of Otoplasty Procedures

Ear Pinning

Ear pinning corrects ears that prominently protrude from your head, setting them back closer to your scalp for a more balanced facial appearance. During surgery, our surgeons sculpt your underlying ear cartilage to create or enhance the natural folds. By creating a more subtle and natural ear position, our patients enjoy a significant boost in their confidence, alleviating the emotional burden associated with prominent ears.

Ear reduction

Ear reduction surgery reduces the overall size of ears that are disproportionately large, focusing more on the dimensions rather than just projection. We precisely remove excess skin and cartilage, strategically placing incisions in natural folds to minimize scarring. The result of reshaping creates smaller, more refined ears and ears that appear better proportioned with other facial features.

Ear Reconstruction

Ear reconstruction is focused on rebuilding an ear that is missing ( Microtia / Anotia ) or severely malformed due to a congenital condition, or as a result of trauma. Our primary goal is to create a new ear structure that appears as natural as possible, restoring symmetry and form to your face. We usually perform this in separate steps to ensure we get the best outcome. It’s a journey that not only restores your ear’s natural appearance but can also be a life-changing experience.

Earlobe Repair

Earlobe repair is designed to correct earlobes that have been torn, stretched, or split from trauma or heavy earrings. The procedure is minor and usually performed in-office under local anesthesia for convenience and comfort. Our surgeon will carefully remove the damaged skin lining the split and meticulously suture the fresh edges together. You’ll find whole, naturally shaped earlobes, which can even be re-pierced after a brief period of healing.

Ideal Candidates for Cosmetic / Reconstructive Ear Surgery

Otoplasty can be a transformative procedure for both children and adults. If you have protruding, misaligned, large, small, or otherwise bothersome ears, otoplasty can create a more balanced and natural appearance.

This procedure can even be performed on children as young as five. If you are younger, this procedure will occur in a surgical center. For older patients, it can be done in office.

If your ears are a source of anxiety or negatively impact your self-esteem, otoplasty can offer a long-term solution.

What To Expect from Otoplasty Surgery

This outpatient procedure uses local anesthesia for comfort while your doctor makes small, strategically placed incisions behind your ears to minimize scarring. The underlying cartilage is then carefully sculpted and repositioned to achieve your desired outcome. (This might involve techniques like weakening or bending the cartilage for pinning back protruding ears, or removing or adding cartilage for size adjustments.)

Excess skin may be removed in some cases to create a more refined appearance and dissolvable sutures are used to close the incisions.

Depending on the complexity of your case, the procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours.

Post-Surgical Care and Recovery

Following surgery, your doctor will provide detailed instructions specific to your case. Expect your ears to be dressed with supportive bandages for 2 days (5 days if you’re a child). Some tenderness and swelling are common.

Otoplasty FAQs

There is no “best age” for cosmetic ear surgery. You should consult your doctor if you are considering this procedure.

Otoplasty results are designed to be permanent. The cartilage sculpted during surgery is a strong tissue that holds its new shape well over time. However, natural aging can cause slight changes like decreased skin elasticity, and in rare cases, excessive scar tissue might require revision.

While otoplasty reshapes your cartilage permanently, minor changes can occur. Natural aging might cause subtle decreases in skin elasticity, potentially making the ears appear slightly less positioned than right after surgery. Overall, the risk of your ears sticking out again is extremely low.

You’ll likely experience some post-operative soreness and tightness. The focus during your recovery is on minimizing any discomfort you feel through medication, swelling reduction techniques, and proper rest.

Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia for older patients. This means the area around your ears will be numb, but you’ll be relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. You might feel some minor tugging or pulling, but won’t experience pain. If you are a younger patient, you’ll be sedated and your doctor will discuss options with you and your legal guardian.
