Blepharoplasty 101: What’s Included, Average Cost, & More

The delicate skin around your eyes is one of the first places we notice aging. Fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, and hooding can make you appear tired even when you feel fully energized. Eyelid surgery, or a blepharoplasty, can address those visible signs of aging. This cosmetic procedure targets wrinkles, puffiness, and hooding around your upper and lower lids to restore a brighter, more youthful look.

What Is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to rejuvenate your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It can also be performed to correct asymmetry or to help improve your vision if droopy upper eyelids obstruct your field of view. The procedure removes or repositions excess skin and fat, and often tightens underlying muscles to create a more refreshed and alert appearance.

Types of Blepharoplasty

  • Upper eyelid surgery: Removes excess skin/fat in your upper lid to address hooding or drooping.
  • Lower eyelid surgery: Eliminates puffiness or “bags” beneath your eyes and smooths the lower-lid area.
  • Combined (upper & lower): For patients who want full eye rejuvenation in one session.
  • Asymmetry correction: One eye may be treated separately to restore balance and harmony.

At Rivé Plastic Surgery, we tailor the approach to your anatomy and goals, whether you need subtle refreshment or a more comprehensive rejuvenation.

How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?

The cost ranges between $6,000 to $10,000, depending on various factors, including your region, the procedure complexity, and the type of anesthesia that’s used. It’s not covered by insurance since blepharoplasty is considered a cosmetic surgery.

When you choose Rivé Plastic Surgery, your blepharoplasty package includes the surgeon’s fees, anesthesia, facility fees, surgical supplies, aftercare instructions, and follow-up visits. We believe in transparent pricing and providing you with a clear plan post-consultation.

What’s Included in a Blepharoplasty

Pre-operative consultation

Your blepharoplasty journey begins with a one-on-one consultation. We’ll assess your eyelid anatomy, skin quality, eye shape, and discuss your goals. We’ll also review your health history and clearly explain realistic expectations. Ideal candidates are people seeking a refreshed, youthful look around their eyes, concerned about upper or lower lid appearance, under-eye bags, or asymmetry,

The procedure

Depending on your plan, eyelid surgery may be performed in-office under local anesthesia (with sedation) or at an outpatient facility under general anesthesia. At Rivé Plastic Surgery, we offer both options when appropriate. Upper-lid surgery usually takes 45 minutes to one hour, while combined upper and lower lid work may take around two hours. Incisions are placed within natural creases or lash lines so scarring is minimal and discreet.

Blepharoplasty procedure recovery & aftercare

Recovery from eyelid surgery tends to be relatively easy. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and sensitivity around your eyes for the first week, and then you should be comfortable returning to your normal activities within 10 to 14 days. Cold compresses, ointments, head elevation, and sun protection are key parts of your aftercare routine. Final results will be more apparent over several weeks as swelling slowly subsides.

Risks, Safety, & Realistic Expectations

As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries risks. When performed by experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons, these risks and side effects are usually minor. Potential side effects include temporary dry eyes, double vision, light sensitivity, and swelling or bruising. It’s important to understand that eyelid surgery refines and refreshes; it doesn’t stop aging entirely. Good sun protection, a healthy lifestyle, and realistic expectations can help you maintain your results.
