Understanding expectations, signs, and long-term care.

There are a number of personal reasons you may seek breast augmentation with implants. Regardless of your reason, this procedure is a significant financial, physical, and emotional investment. If you’re asking yourself how long your implants will last, that question is absolutely fair, both in protecting your health and your investment.

The answer isn’t a simple expiration date. It is a combination of factors including the type of implant, your body, and your lifestyle. We’re here to replace uncertainty with clarity, so you can enjoy your beautiful, confidence-inspiring results for years to come.

What Is the Average Lifespan of Breast Implants?

Both saline and silicone implants have an average lifespan of 10 to 20 years. While the FDA makes clear that implants are not lifetime devices, there’s no mandatory amount of years that requires a replacement. Many people keep their implants for over a decade with no issues, while other people may experience side effects or complications that require a change.

Regular self-monitoring and check-ups with your plastic surgeon are a great way to ensure your long-term health.

Signs Your Breast Implants May Need Replacement

It’s true, modern implants are designed for durability, but there are signs to look for that may indicate the need for a replacement.

Changes in appearance may develop as asymmetry between your breasts, rippling or wrinkling of your implants that are visible through your skin, distorted implant shape, or breast deflation. If there is an obvious loss of size in one of your breasts, this deflation is a clear sign that your implant has ruptured.

Along with visible changes to your implants, you may also feel hard lumps, a hardening of your breast, ongoing pain, or swelling, tenderness, or numbness. All of these feelings or sensations may indicate the need for a replacement.

If you suspect that your implant has ruptured, schedule an appointment with your surgeon for further tests and evaluation. For saline implant ruptures, you’ll notice rapid breast deflation. Silicone ruptures may not show immediate signs and your doctor can confirm with imaging.

Factors That Affect Breast Implant Longevity

Factors that influence how long your breast implants will last range from the implant itself to your individual body and lifestyle. The type of implants, including saline or silicone, shell surface, implant placement, and overall implant quality all play an important role. So too do major weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and your body’s natural healing process. Understanding these variables is the first step in protecting your implants and your doctor is a great resource to answer any questions.

How Can You Make Your Breast Implants Last Longer?

The answer begins right after your procedure. Following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions is the best way to properly heal and build a foundation for a longer lifespan. From there, you can help promote longevity by maintaining a stable weight and wearing supportive bras—especially during high-impact exercise— to reduce strain that can lead to premature sagging.

Performing regular self-exams, attending all follow-up appointments with your surgeon, and staying on top of recommended imaging appointments (which you can discuss with your surgeon), also help identify potential issues to address them early.
